Mexican immigrant in Texas speaks out after chihuahua develops persistent gas from overly spiced diet

EL PASO, Texas. A Mexican immigrant living in El Paso has formally raised concerns about her dog’s repeated atmospheric disruptions after introducing a culturally themed diet intended to help the animal better reflect its household identity.

The dog, a chihuahua who lives full-time in the apartment and participates in all domestic routines, was gradually transitioned to croquettes infused with multiple varieties of chili, including jalapeño, guajillo, and chile de árbol. According to the owner, the adjustment was meant to ensure that “nothing in the home felt disconnected from where we come from.”

“I didn’t want him eating something that didn’t represent us,” she said. “Food is how you transmit values.”

Shortly after the program began, the chihuahua started producing frequent and forceful intestinal responses, most often during shared moments such as evening television viewing and administrative phone calls. The owner said the emissions appeared deliberate and well-timed, suggesting awareness of their impact on the household environment.

A local veterinarian familiar with culturally motivated feeding practices said such outcomes are consistent with dogs assuming a more active role in domestic decision-making. “When dogs are included at this level, they don’t just consume culture,” the veterinarian said. “They interpret it.”

Pet food retailers in the area confirmed an increase in customers requesting regionally specific flavor profiles, including “border-style,” “heritage spice,” and “family recipe-adjacent” formulations. One store manager said chihuahuas, in particular, tend to express feedback immediately.

Neighbors reported no complaints, noting that the situation appeared to be “an internal matter being handled seriously.”

The owner has since reduced the number of chili varieties but said she has no plans to remove spice entirely. “He needs to know where he lives,” she said.

As of this week, the chihuahua continues to eat the adjusted croquettes and maintains full access to shared spaces, including the couch.
