Dog detained after urinating on neighbor’s flowers

PASADENA, CALIFORNIA. A dog was briefly detained Tuesday morning after local authorities responded to a complaint involving repeated urination on a neighbor’s flowers in a residential neighborhood, according to city officials.

The incident occurred on a quiet block where the flowers had been installed earlier this year as part of what the homeowner described as a long-term landscaping plan. The neighbor reported that the dog had incorporated the planting into its regular morning route, despite the plants’ decorative purpose and private status.

Animal control officers said the dog was approached calmly and informed of the complaint before being escorted, along with its owner, for routine documentation. “This was treated as a matter of use and impact,” said a spokesperson for the Pasadena Department of Community Services. “The flowers were not public, and their role in the garden had been clearly defined.

The dog’s owner said the route had been consistent for months and that the flower bed was located along what the dog appeared to recognize as an established stopping point. “Nothing about the environment suggested a change in expectations,” the owner said. “The flowers were present, but the routine was already in place.

The reporting neighbor said informal attempts to redirect the behavior had failed, including standing near the plants during peak walking hours and repositioning decorative stones. “The flowers continued to be acknowledged,” the neighbor said. “At that point, I felt it required documentation.

City officials confirmed that no citation was issued. Instead, the dog was released with an advisory recommending an adjusted walking pattern that avoids sensitive ornamental installations. Pasadena recently updated its guidelines to allow homeowners to register certain flower beds as requiring additional consideration due to their maintenance demands.

By the afternoon, the flowers remained in place, while the dog was observed resuming its walk one block over.
