MLS Match Suspended After Dog Enters Field to Pursue Cat, Drawing In Players and Bench

LOS ANGELES. A Major League Soccer match was suspended Saturday after a dog entered the field of play and began pursuing a cat, prompting an extended response from stadium security, players, and substitutes that officials said left both teams too fatigued to continue.

According to stadium personnel, the incident began when a cat appeared near the touchline and moved toward the central third. Within moments, a dog entered through an access point near the lower seating area and ran directly onto the pitch, bypassing the ball and active play to focus exclusively on the cat.

Security staff initially attempted to contain the dog using standard removal procedures, including coordinated movement and physical barriers. The dog, however, repeatedly changed direction in reaction to the cat’s movements, which shifted between short sprints and sudden pauses along the sideline and through open space behind players.

As minutes passed without resolution, officials briefly paused play while security continued efforts to secure the dog. The interruption lengthened as the dog maintained pursuit and the cat continued to relocate across the field in a pattern that witnesses described as “consistent” and “uninterested in cooperation.”

Players from both teams then began assisting, first by attempting to form a perimeter and later by pursuing the dog directly. Substitutes and staff from the benches joined shortly afterward, expanding the effort to multiple groups moving across the pitch at once. During the pursuit, the match clock continued to run, as stoppage procedures were applied inconsistently amid repeated attempts to restore order.

By the time officials attempted to restart the match, several players were visibly winded from sustained sprinting and abrupt changes of direction. Team medical staff were seen assessing multiple individuals for cramping and shortness of breath. Match officials then convened with coaches and stadium operations, ultimately determining that competitive play could not safely resume.

The match was formally suspended, with league representatives citing player exhaustion resulting from “extended physical exertion unrelated to play.”

The incident concluded only after stadium staff identified the dog’s owner and contacted him at his workplace. According to a league official with knowledge of the response, the owner had been working nearby and kept the dog at home, in a residence located close enough to the stadium for the animal to reach the venue without transportation.

After receiving permission to leave work, the owner arrived at the stadium and entered the field area under escort. Witnesses said the dog’s behavior changed immediately upon the owner’s arrival, ending the pursuit within minutes. The cat left the field on its own shortly afterward.

Neither team reported serious injuries, though several players were observed continuing to stretch and hydrate after the suspension was announced. Stadium operations said the match will be rescheduled pending league review.

MLS officials said they will evaluate stadium access controls and update guidance for future incidents involving animals entering the field during play, noting that current protocols prioritize removal but do not account for extended, multi-party pursuits that compromise player readiness.

The league did not indicate whether the dog will face further restrictions.
